Smoking
05.05.04 (5:43 pm)   [edit]
While waiting at the bus stop the other day, a man asks me if I had a light for his cigarette. Usually, I just say no and I'm left alone. On this day, however, I felt completely stressed out and proceeded to lecture him on smoking. I didn't preach. I just told him that I would never give anybody a light because not only did smoking kill my dad ( he died in May, 1999,) but it is also killing my mom (she has been battling lung cancer for the last 2 and 1/2 years, but more than likely won't make it through the year.) He tried to tell me that this is an evil habit and that he has tried to quit. That's all he said, and that's all I said. Did I make a difference, I'm not sure. As far as I know, he didn't ask anyone else for a light.

Okay, if you want to relieve some stress, do a google search for "Penguin toss" and play the game. It is only some mindless fun.

Plumbing problem
05.04.04 (4:45 pm)   [edit]
No, it is not the personal plumbing problem I'm writing about, but the house variety. Whenever we do a load of laundry, the sewer drain backs up. Before calling a plumber, I tried to snake out the drain with little success. So my next move is to call a plumber. I call the plumber and they say the problem is a blockage in the pipe going from the house to the sewer. This is a little bit of good news because someone had told me earlier that I might have a collapsed pipe. With this, we are talking major dollars and cents. :(

Anyways, plumber and helper get this gigantic pipe snake and try to cut through whatever is causing the blockage. Of course, as luck has it, this does not work. Plumber says that he has found concrete like material that he cannot cut through. He then proceeds to tell me that I would need a new pipe. In the process, however, I would need to tear down my porch to excavate the existing pipe.

You would not believe how much my heart sank at this moment. For one, as a handyman, I rate a 1 on a scale of 10. Everything that must be done would have to be done by outside sources. Secondly, I do not have funds to cover such an expense. Let me backup a second. It cost me $40.00 for them to come out to my house to tell me it is going to cost me $300.00 to clean the drain. Which, by the way, is not guaranteed to work. And if takes more than 1 hour I will be charged another $300.00. So, in the end, I just paid (charged) for a service that didn't work.
Yep, I am one smart person.

To get back to my long story, Mr. plumber, now $300.00 richer, tells me that his dad, who owns the company, has a water jet that releases so much pressure, it is able to go through frozen mud. WOW, not really, but this fantastic solution would cost me another $300.00. Again, without any guarantee of working.

I still can't do wash at home. I'm out $300.00 and back to where I started. Yellow pages here I come for a second opinion. Owning a home is great, but the problems suck.
